Eugene Towne founded Towne Air Freight (TAF), in South Bend, Indiana in 1963 with one employee and
one van-continuing to run a small, locally focused business for many years. Gary "Duke" Downey then
purchased the company in August 1982. At that time, South Bend was the only location with 18 employees,
two tractors and nine straight trucks. The core business was local pickup and delivery service in
South Bend, as well as linehaul service between South Bend and Chicago's O'Hare Airport for the freight
community.
Between 1983 and 1994, Towne Air Freight opened locations throughout Indiana, Illinois, Michigan and Ohio. In the years following 1994, Towne's footprint grew to include facilities in Kentucky, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Pennsylvania, New York, Georgia and Florida integrating air freight service throughout the Midwest, East Coast and Southeast. In addition, satellite service locations were added New Jersey along with both North and South Carolina.
In 1995, Towne Air Freight became a subsidiary of Towne Holdings, Inc., a privately held corporation.
Towne entered into a partnership with Lufthansa Cargo in Chicago in 1997 to become the exclusive carrier for air freight shipments coming into the United States. As the need for U.S.-based trucking management handling international airline shipments grew, the leadership of Towne Air Freight saw an opportunity to create a new company catering to this niche group of customers.
In 2003, Towne Network Solutions (TNS) was officially established as a separate entity from Towne Air Freight, making it the third wholly-owned subsidiary of Towne Holdings, Inc. after TAF and Rocket Expedited Services.
Today, TNS employs approximately 30 highly-skilled team members with varied experience in the trucking, air freight forwarding and airline industries. The TNS team provides comprehensive freight management in the U.S. for some of the world's largest movers of cargo via Towne Air Freight and other partner trucking companies.
Present management of Towne Holdings includes Tom Downey, President and Chief Executive Officer; Joe Dooley, Chief Financial Officer; Jerry Scott, Vice President of Human Resources. Paul Martins holds the position of Senior Vice President of Sales & Marketing and also serves as President of TNS. Dave Kreigh is Vice President of Operations for TNS.
